Evinrude Motors Discontinued

Evinrude was part of Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP). In May 2020, BRP announced that they would cease production of new Evinrude outboard motors. As Evinrude was one of the oldest outboard manufacturers, this announcement shocked many Evinrude dealers and customers. BRP stated that the COVID-19 pandemic had impacted the outboard engine business. 

BRP said that Evinrude outboards had struggled to remain competitive with other brands, even before the pandemic. While Evinrude’s two-stroke engines won awards for efficiency and low emissions, consumers preferred four-stroke outboard engines. Supply chain issues caused by the pandemic further injured the brand. In addition, the pandemic caused staffing challenges. 

Evinrude History

Ole Evinrude founded Evinrude in 1907. Ole Evinrude was born in Norway and came to America as a child. He invented an outboard that featured horizontal flywheels, a vertical crankshaft, and gears. This basic setup is still used by outboard manufacturers today. Ole Evinrude’s first outboard motor was a one-cylinder, one-and-a-half horsepower model and was introduced in 1909. 

Ole Evinrude sold his company in 1913 and started a new company in 1921. In 1929, the two companies merged. In 1936, Evinrude merged with Johnson Motor Company, and the new company was renamed the Outboard Marine Corporation. OMC continued to manufacture outboards throughout the decades. Bombardier Recreational Products acquired the Evinrude brand in 2000 after Evinrude declared bankruptcy.

Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) manufactured Evinrude outboards until May 2020. BRP stated that the COVID-19 pandemic had impacted their business. BRP said that they would focus on manufacturing boats and outfit the new boats with Mercury engines.
